Electrification
Electrification is reshaping mobility, energy storage and the way power is generated and consumed. We support this transformation with products designed to improve performance, safety and durability in advanced electrification technologies. Our solutions contribute to the development of electric mobility and energy storage systems, supporting the evolution toward a more efficient and low-carbon future. At the same time, our technologies contribute to circular economy models by enabling the recovery of critical metals from Lithium-Ion Batteries, supporting more sustainable electrification value chains.

Italmatch Chemicals supports the rapidly evolving E-mobility landscape with a comprehensive portfolio of specialty chemicals designed for Electric Vehicle Batteries.
In battery manufacturing, phosphorus chlorides play an important role. Phosphorus trichloride (PCl₃) and phosphorus pentachloride (PCl₅) are used in the production of lithium-ion battery electrolytes, contributing to the performance and reliability required by modern EV Batteries. Italmatch also provides key raw materials for solid-state batteries, supplying phosphorus pentasulphide (P2S5) for next-generation E-mobility systems based on lithium, phosphorus and sulphur.
Beyond battery manufacturing, resource efficiency and circularity are becoming increasingly important. Italmatch offers innovative phosphorus-based solvent extraction reagents (Ionquest range) used to selectively separate and recover critical metals such as cobalt, nickel, zinc, uranium and rare earth elements. These solutions are also applied in the recovery of valuable materials from recycled Lithium-Ion Batteries, supporting more sustainable battery lifecycles.
Safety is another essential pillar in the development of Electric Vechicles. Italmatch Chemicals flame retardant solutions are designed to reduce fire risks associated with thermal runaway events in EV Batteries. Our phosphorus-based flame retardants are formulated to provide effective fire resistance, supporting safer battery systems. The portfolio includes solutions such as Masteret®, Phoslite® and Melagard®, which are used in a wide range of halogen-free flame-retardant applications and, in some polymers like ABS, HIPS and PBT, as alternatives to antimony trioxide. Their performance is linked to the high phosphorus content and the ability to form a compact and resistant char layer under flame exposure. These additives are essential in preventing the spread of flames, thereby protecting users and increasing the vehicle safety.
We are fully equipped to support the development of advanced fluids for electric vehicles, leveraging deep formulation expertise to address the unique performance, durability, and sustainability requirements of next-generation e-mobility. From molecule-level design to system-level optimization, our capabilities enable lubricants engineered specifically for electrified powertrains.
As the global shift toward electrification accelerates, the demands placed on lubricants are evolving just as rapidly. Electric vehicles (EVs) – including Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) – operate under fundamentally different conditions than traditional internal combustion engines, driving the need for a new class of lubricant technologies.
At Italmatch Chemicals, we are at the forefront of this transformation. Our expertise lies in the development of high-performance corrosion inhibitors, anti-wear agents, and extreme pressure (EP) additives, with a strong foundation in phosphorus-based and polymeric ester technologies.
These chemistries are critical in addressing the unique challenges of electrified drivetrains, including:
- Copper corrosion protection in both liquid and vapor phases – essential for high-voltage systems and e-motor components.
- Noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) control, where lubricant formulation plays a key role in reducing gear whine and improving driver comfort.
- High torque at low speed, which increases the risk of micro-pitting and scuffing in gear systems.
- Thermal management, especially under fast-charging and high-load conditions, where lubricants must support efficient heat dissipation without compromising electrical insulation.
As regulatory frameworks evolve to support cleaner, safer, and more efficient mobility, our product development is fully aligned with emerging global standards. We actively monitor and contribute to evolving specifications such as SAE J3200, OEM EV fluid requirements, and regional environmental directives. Our commitment to compliance ensures that our technologies are not only high-performing but also future-ready.
The acceleration of EV technology is presenting new opportunities – and new challenges. At Italmatch Chemicals, we can help you address both.
